The purpose of this article is to provide instructions on how to clear your browser cache and other data information across popular web browsers.
Over time, web browsers store data after each use. This data includes your browsing and download history. Web browsers use this information to speed up the loading of previously viewed pages by pulling this information from a specific directory located on your computer when a page is loaded. This helps webpages with lots of information or that host a large amount of media to load quickly.
However, with excessive use over long periods of time this temporary or "cached" data can accumulate and result in webpages loading incorrect/outdated information such as web links or login information. In addition, this excessive data can result in a slower web browsing experience since the browser needs to analyze and pull these pieces of data before displaying a web page. To help ensure the best browser experience, you should clear out your browser's data and cache on a regular basis.
Delete your browsing data on:
- Click the Mozilla Firefox menu (icon with three horizontally stacked lines: ) on the browser toolbar.
- Click on Options (icon shaped like a gear) from the drop-down menu that appears.
- In the Options drop-down menu that opens, click Privacy & Security. .
- In the Privacy & Security window, under the History section, click on the blue font "clear your recent history". This opens a window to select exactly what information you want to clear.
- In the Clear All History window, under the Details field, make sure click the checkboxes for "Browsing & Download History", "Form & Search History", "Cookies", and "Cache", are selected. You may leave the other checkboxes set to the default.
- Once the options in the Details field are selected, click the drop-down menu next to Time range to clear to choose how much of your history Firefox will clear. To ensure everything is cleared, select Everything.
- Finally, click the Clear Now button to complete the process.
- In the top-right corner of the browser window, click the Chrome menu (icon with three horizontally stacked lines: ) on the browser toolbar.
- Select Settings, scroll down to Advanced, and select.
- Under Privacy and security, click the arrow next to Clear browsing data. A dialog will appear.
- From the drop-down menu, select how much history you want to delete. To clear your entire browsing history, select the beginning of time.
- Check the boxes for the data you want Chrome to clear, including “browsing history." Learn more about the types of browsing data you can delete
- Click the button Clear browsing data.
Internet Explorer 11 (Windows 7)
- Click the Internet Explorer menu (icon shaped like a gear) on the browser toolbar.
- Click on or hover over Safety on the drop-down menu, then click on Delete Browsing History. A dialogue will appear.
- In the Delete Browsing History window , make sure the checkboxes for "Temporary Internet files and website files", "Cookies and website data", and "History" are selected. You may leave the other checkboxes set to the default.
- Once the desired options have been selected, click the Delete button in the bottom of the window to remove all data.
Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut: press Control (Command on a Mac), Shift and Delete simultaneously. This works in all web browsers and makes it so that the dialogue window appears.
